Very Vinyasa

Very Vinyasa

I’ve never been big on working out or going to the gym. In fact, when I danced for the Knicks, all the dancers were given a free membership to Prescriptives gym a $400 per month membership, but I never went, well, I went once, one time in the 3 years that I was on the team. I guess I was one of the lucky ones that didn’t have to worry about what I ate or keeping in shape. Wait, don’t start hating me yet, notice how I said was – past tense. The body isn’t what it used to be; circulation is poor and I’m getting a little extra around the middle. It’s not the end of the world, but that’s how it starts right.

LaughingLotusSign 150x150 Very VinyasaMy longtime friend, Alison is the co-creative director at the Laughing Lotus center in NYC. Her devotion and love for the art of yoga is shown in her teaching. She believes that the practice, “your practice” as it’s called, is not only beneficial for your physical being, but for your mental and spiritual being as well. Her aim is to get me to see my body as a tool for health, happiness and strength. In other words, she wants me to get off my butt and get into class.

I look at the clock and it’s 2:00pm. I’m sitting on the couch watching TV. I had a long rehearsal yesterday for an upcoming gig so I’m tired and, plus it’s cold outside. I’m supposed to go to Ali’s class at 4:15pm. Thus begins the inner fight: “I don’t know if I can do it, I’m so tired, I don’t wanna leave the house, it’s cold outside, I haven’t taken class in 100 years, etc… Boy, oh boy was hard to get out of the house, but I was so glad I did.

I arrived right before class started and walked into a packed room, the usual for Ali’s class. Luckily Melissa had saved me a spot. Alison is very attentive. She walks around correcting your position, pushing you to your full potential and the 10 second foot massage doesn’t hurt. It’s only for a few seconds as she passes by you, but the relief of pressure seems to relieve a multitude of stress. I was proud of myself for going. Now that I have physically worked my body and fed my mind, it was time to feed my body, literally.

AlisClassLaughingLotus 150x150 Very VinyasaMelissa, Derrick, Ali and I went to the Westville restaurant in Chelsea a few blocks away from Laughing Lotus. Our bodies didn’t crave meat after that session, just vegetables. So, I decided to listen. I had the kelp, brussels sprouts, sweet potato with cheddar and beets with goat cheese. It was simply amazing and just what the body needed.

I was glad I went, I saw old friends, one which I hadn’t seen in years and fed my mind, body and soul. I can’t make any promises, but I will definitely try to make it back to class in the near future. After all, my body is the vessel, if I don’t take care of it, who will.
