Sausage Salad – Wurstsalat

Wurstsalat is a german word that actually translates into sausage salad. The sausage that they use is similar to American bologna. Wurstsalat is a traditional brunch or luncheon meal that is quite popular in Germany. It’s often served with bread and fried potatoes, thus, making it a great compliment to the German Potato Pancakes we made in the Guten Tag webisode. Follow Petra’s recipe below to make this amazing German salad.

Serving: 6-8 people


  • 3 lbs Wurstsalat (Fleischwurst, Lyonerwurst or a good quality American Bologna)
  • 1 tablespoon of fresh parsley (minced)
  • 4 small dill pickles
  • 1/2 cup of white vinegar
  • 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil (not olive oil)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon of pepper


  • Serving bowl
  • mixing bowl
  • whisk or wooden spoon


  1. Cut Wurstsalat into thin (1/4″ W x 4″ L) slices
  2. Cut ends off Pickles, cut in half and then into thin slivers
  3. Mince Parsley
  4. Place above into a serving bowl
  5. In a separate bowl pour in and whisk vinegar, oil, salt and pepper (if desired can add onions and/or fresh garlic)
  6. Pour desired amount into serving bowl and toss the ingredients
  7. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours so that the ingredients can marinate
  8. After 2 hours, take out, give it one final mix, serve cold and Enjoy!

Note: Remove the salad from the refrigerator 20 minutes before serving
