I think it’s safe to say that every culture loves applesauce. It’s probably the most popular item served to toddlers and just tends to be comfort food for all ages. It’s not only delicious, it also has a lot of health benefits (e.g. fiber and antioxidants). For Germans, applesauce is a great accompaniment to their Potato Pancakes. Follow Petra’s recipe below to create the best applesauce for kids of all ages.

Cuisine: German

Course: Appetizer or Snack

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cooking Time: 20 minutes

Total Time: 30 minutes

  • 4 apples
  • 3/4 cup of water

  • wooden spoon
  • fork or potato masher
  • bowl

  1. Peel, core and chop the apples
  2. Place apples and water in saucepan
  3. Cover and cook over medium heat for 20 minutes (until apples are soft)
  4. Allow to cool
  5. Add sugar and cinnamon
  6. Mix with a wooden spoon and mash with a fork or potato masher (make sure there aren’t any large pieces)
  7. Pour in a bowl and then place inĀ refrigerator to let cool

Note: If desired, you can add sugar and cinnamon before you cook the apples, but do not mash until after cooked. Also, if you need to cool down the applesauce quickly you can put it in the freezer.
